Wooooo
Haven't been to a show in almost a year. ANY show. I missed Warped because I was in Canada, and I haven't had money to go to any since that.
Nov 22 - Avalon - Tiesto, $15 Nov 26 - Avalon - Oakenfold, $15
Work start date - Nov 21 1st paycheck - Beginning of December
Boo. However, it's cheap enough that I just might borrow/beg money to go. Anyone up for it? Realistically, I'd probably only be going to Oakenfold. Oh, and no crap over the punk/techno thing. :P

Random post
So I talked to 2 people I haven't talked to in forever. Well, I didn't actually talk to them. Left a LJ post and sent an email. I dunno if either will even read them, but what the hell.
In retrospect, it was kind of stupid to send them, given that I actually don't want either of them to dislike me, and given my all-encompasing bad luck recently. If anyone wants to know how I've been recently, ask me how I dealt with the a drunk friend, an accident, a drunk girlfriend, the police twice, got robbed, gained possession of a possibly stolen cell phone, and had someone attempt to carjack me, among other things, in one night. Oh, and ask me on the phone or something...I'm not dropping THAT out in the open here.

Calling tech support
So I'm averaging 300k/s on my cable modem, and have been for the past 6 months, even though I'm paying for the 3MBPS service.
I finally called Charter, and I hear: "Your current approximate wait time is 30 minutes."
Me: "YOU'VE GOTTA BE FUCKING KIDDI......"
Charter: "Your current approximate wait time is 4 minutes."
God I hate it when they use speech recognition to find out what my issue is, yet I LOVE it when they use the speech recognition system to rearrange queue length based on how pissed off the caller is. :)

Interesting site: http://www.downingstreetmemo.com/
I'm still waiting to see how valid the info is. Interesting anyway.
MQP is going decently, although I think it's definitely going to come down to the last 1 or 2 weeks and then become a race to finish everything that needs to be done. I thought it'd be a lot more work, but so far it's a whole lot of hurry up and wait. Can't wait to be done...

Old Drivers
They, in general, suck.
Not even a week ago I was talking with Vicki about how her 92 y/o grandmother (according to rumor) has renewed her driver's license by HAVING SOMEONE ELSE DRIVE TO THE DMV FOR HER!!! She's a bad enough driver that she stays off of main roads and has her basically blind husband take over driving when she's in a parking lot....because she can't drive in reverse at all. To top it off, we can't get her license revoked or force her to take a driver's test because she doesn't have a primary care physician, which is the required legal notifier in whatever state she's licensed in. I am the most likely candidate for having to call the police and tell them that she's been driving erratically, just because the family wants it done but they're all wusses about doing it. Hell, Vicki's uncles blame anything "bad" or "mean" that they have to do on their wives.
I've been stewing over this for a couple of days, not really caring too much whether or not I have to do it...but then today on my way to my MQP meeting, I'm driving down West St. when a silver Mercedes pulls RIGHT OUT IN FRONT OF ME. I'm going about 30, and I pretty much lock all 4 tires trying to stop, and stop about 6" short of the driver's side of the car. Old man driving. This would have been typical and pretty much shrugged off except for the fact that the old bastard then had the balls to open his door, situate his cane/walker, remove himself from the car (looked like it was pretty painful to do so), and proceed to stand there and yell at me! He even shook his cane at me!!! I didn't know whether to laugh or let off of the brake...
Too bad I didn't stop 6 1/2" or 7" later. I have the feeling the commando bumpers on my '79 Volvo would take out the side of a new Benz with little or no trouble, and little or no damage to my car.

NIN and caffine
Kevin and his brother bought tickets to NIN, but his brother had to leave for California last night...so he gave me his ticket.
Awesome show, even though NIN is generally something I can't sit down and listen to for an extended period. Lots of songs I liked, and some I didn't particularly. Trent Reznor is great on stage, and the visuals were a nice touch. The Dresden Dolls opened, and although it's (again) stuff that I wouldn't sit down and listen to for an extended period of time, the music was done extremely well. Both bands are very successful at unique composition of songs, and both have developed their distinctive styles well. The Dolls play a lot with timing, probably more so than any other band I've seen live, pausing for beats, messing with tempo, and just generally seeming to have a good time screwing with the audience (in a good way).
Wandered around Boston for a bit afterward. We were planning on going to a bar where Kevin's friend is working, but she informed us that "street attire" was not allowed in the bar...And we figured that we weren't getting in with Kevin wearing jeans and a NIN shirt and me wearing the black bondage pants. :P
Bahh, forgot the caffine part...I gotta get off the stuff. I've had the equivalent of something like 10 pots of coffee in the past week, but it's been in spurts. I can't go an entire day w/o caffine or I get a headache right now, but I've been doing a lot of late-night driving, so each night I've been having 1 or 2 Double Shots (Starbucks) plus an energy drink of some kind, and occasionally a caffine pill. (I know I'm bad...) That's in addition to what I've needed to keep myself awake during the day. It's time to stop that, so I'm going to try to start tomorrow. I figure a day of cold turkey quitting followed by a small to moderate amount every day after should leave me not too bitchy, but I apologize in advance for the assholeness that I'm predicting.

Vacation
Work is interesting after losing one of 3 quasi-bosses. I know I should have more work, but there were almost no calls today. Jeff basically offered me a job for $50k, but I'd have to be in NY for good, and my employment would be partially at the whim of the public education system, which seems to be failing pretty miserably in NY recently.
On the plus side, I figured out that I am (barely) going to be able to afford to complete my MQP this summer, although I'll have literally NO money to go to school next year., It means that I'll have my major project done, and I should be able to complete like 5 more night courses to get the WPI degree. :)
I've really got to spend some time sorting and taking pictures of various car parts and computer parts so I can attempt to put together the cash needed to buy car parts that I actually need. It sucks because I've got like 4 or 5 things that need to be done to the car, but everything's so damn expensive that I'm going to blow like $500 before labor. Granted, that's not a WHOLE lot, but I just really have a hard time paying for labor when it's something that I can do perfectly well on my own...but I just don't have the time. (Witness the missing door panel...I swear I'm going to finish the stereo install soon!!) In addition, I have a very hard time paying $500 for all of the parts I need, and getting none of the parts that I want to add comfort/handling to the car...especially when for $700 I can buy a complete car with literally everything I need to fix mine plus swap the entire interior to a nicer one, upgrade the springs and swaybars, go to a 4 spd + overdrive (no more 30 mph in top gear or 4500 rpm on the highway), swap the sagging driver's side seat and the decent passenger's seat for two nice ones, and add foglights. Oooh, and better brakes.
I've got to find the time after school's done to part the car I might buy and then install all the parts into mine. I really need the warmup regulator so I don't have to start my car 9x a day in the winter and the blower fan so my defrost works. Damn, now I really need someone to help me. :P

School's out for summer; School's out forever
Well it looks like I'm goin' to work probably.
My parents just found out that they can't take any more loans on my school without possibly being denied for my sister's school loans and the loan for the garage that they NEED to build this summer. I suspect that another loan taken by them would also cause problems in payment for the care of my Grandfather as well, although they haven't said this.
I can't take any more loans due to the sheer number (not necessarily amount, but actually the number) that I already have.
This means no summer term unless we can scrape it together, and definitely no full time school after that no matter what. Unfortunately, if I miss summer term (MQP) I'm screwed, because when else am I going to be able to do it? There's no freaking way I can do THAT while working.
Anyone know any place that's hiring IT help? Ahh well, off to make a new resume.

Braaaaaainnssssssss!
Just a random quiz:
Survivor Well, well. You scored a whopping 266 points. | | Awesome. You have what it takes to maybe, just maybe survive the horrific future in store for all mankind. You're probably not going to shoot yourself in the face, and you're not likely going to go running off alone into the unexplored areas. Try not to drop the flashlight, and you may see the sunrise. | |

Damn, I did it again.
As usual, I'm going overboard with my designs again. Half of the project that was due today I thought needed to be implemented using a database. Turns out it didn't. On the plus side, I almost figured out databases in VB in one night. On the minus side, the project didn't get finished past the initial design phase, and I'm going to lose MAJOR credit for it.

Whoooo what a week...
Well the beginning of the week was the mutha of crappy Mondays...I wasn't able to escape the 1 hospital trip per year. I actually tried to go to a walk-in clinic, but they ended up sending me to UMass, since they said I needed a chest x-ray, and x-ray at the clinic had closed 3 hours before I got there. Supid death flu...I'm finally nicely recovered from the weeklong cold, and trying to make up for the fact that I didn't eat for like 5 or 6 days.
I've got an engine for my project car, and I'm slowly pulling together more and more pieces. I've really got to get going on the whole learning to weld thing, though, since I'm going to have a decent amount to do when I actually de-rust the car next summer or sometime around them.
I also learned this week that I'll (hopefully) be out of school by Christmas, a full 2 terms earlier than expeected, and a full 2 terms longer than I should have had to take. Fortunately it's a full 4 terms earlier than when I would have graduated, had I decided to continue as an MIS. It's nice that the school gave me this great "distribution sheet" containing all of the classes I had to take, but it would have been much nicer if they had told me that four of the classes (the last four listed in a sheet with like 48 or so classes total) were mandatory for starting an MQP... At least things are working out.

This weekend might be good, if it's not too snowy. I'm really looking forward to finally having my friend come out from NY, but I'm kind of worried since it was partially a snowstorm that kept him from coming last time.
In related news, although my lease says I have one parking spot in the driveway, I've somehow managed to mooch one for my '83 (unregistered and in need of repair), my '79, Vicki's car, and Brad's as well. Unfortunately, we can't use ANY spots right now because it's too damn muddy. I'm really not sure what we're going to do if it doesn't freeze tonight before the snow, because none of us have resident parking permits.
Anyone know how to get a resident parking pass as a student here?

Nice quiz Alan
 | You scored as alternative. You're partially respected for being an individual in a conformist world yet others take you as a radical. You have no place in society because you choose not to belong there - you're the luckiest of them all, even if your parents are completely ashamed of you. Just don't take drugs ok?

Goodbye, and thanks for what you gave...We'll miss you.
From: http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/national/2004/12/09/damageplan-shooting041209.html COLUMBUS, OHIO - A man opened fire in an Ohio nightclub Wednesday night, killing a heavy metal guitarist and three others before a police officer shot him to death.
The unidentified man climbed onto the stage at the Alrosa Villa just as the band Damageplan was opening its show, firing several shots at guitarist Dimebag Darrel Abbott.
Abbott was killed, witnesses said.
The gunman also killed a club bouncer and two other people before a police officer arriving at the scene shot and killed him.
Two other people were wounded as the man fired into the crowd before police arrived.
Abbott's brother Vinnie Paul Abbott is the drummer for Damageplan and was also on stage Wednesday night.
Both men were original members of pioneer thrash band Pantera when it recorded four albums between 1990 and 1996, including Far Beyond Driven, which debuted at No. 1 in 1994.

Ahh, the irony.
Anyone who's seen my apartment and knows that I have four cats (well, Vicki has 2 and I have 2) agrees.... There should be no way a mouse can survive in the place. There's no room that's difficult for a cat to get to, and most of the hidden places are cat-accessible.
It's funny, because everyone besides us moved out of our LAST apartment building because of rodents. We just heard squeeks of terror occasionally at night, and never saw anything. Our new apartment had 2 mice when we first moved in. The first one was found, shredded and dried on the kitchen floor after the first night we were here. I thought that it was just dust and a torn-up mouse toy until I found an ear and the skull. The second one was found headless in the middle of the kitchen about a week later.
Somehow, the apartments above and below us have recently gotten mice. Somehow, the mice have found a way to get to and from the bottom of the stove, and live there despite the fact that it's a gas stove and has a broiler at the bottom of it.
SOMEHOW, the mice have gotten ahold of 3 mouse toys and copious amounts of CAT FUR...to make their nest!!!!!

Music Crisis!!! >.
Allright, I've finally reached it....I'm out of good homework/driving music. Usually I listen to the same stuff while driving or doing HW, because it keeps me awake and alert. Ironically, I listen to about half of the same stuff when I'm going to bed. Figure that one out...
Anyway, I'm out of music. I've been listening to the same stuff for months, and I need some suggestions. I like a cohesive album. You know, one that flows from beginning to end with no large breaks in mood/tempo/etc. I've got:
A Guy Called Gerald - Essence (VERY good, better for sleep though)
Paul Oakenfold - Perfecto Fluoro (Disc 1 is very good, but the burned copy has breaks in the music) :(
Propellerheads - Decksandrumsandrockandroll (nice, almost too much beat as opposed to melody, but it's used creatively)
I've got a couple others, as well, but you get the point. Anyone got any suggestions?
